Welcome to the

21st Backwaterman 2026
June 26–28, 2026

Discover the mystique of Lake Ottenstein

Our motto for 2026:
"Enjoy the LAST ONE"

After 20 years of sweat, goosebumps, perseverance, and unforgettable emotions, the Backwaterman 2026 will be held for the very last time.

Together, Wolfgang – the founder and heart of this event – and I have decided to close this chapter with dignity, and with one final, unforgettable race.

This final edition is not meant to be a quiet farewell –
but a celebration for everyone who has ever been part of this journey.

For those who braved cold waters, conquered themselves, and experienced magical moments in nature.

We want to dive in one last time –
into the adventure,
into the stillness of the lake,
into the power of competition.

One last race.
One last moment of goosebumps.
One last Backwaterman.

The natural beauty unfolds in the fjord-like waterways of the Ottensteiner Reservoir, lined with numerous bends and twists, waiting to be circumnavigated by swim

For this final edition, we’ve planned some special highlights:

  • Hall of Fame Gathering: On June 26, a special evening will be organized for our Hall of Fame athletes – multiple-time winners of the 7 km and 14 km events. A limited number of spots are available for booking.
  • 10-time Finishers: All athletes who have started 10 times receive a free entry for the event of their choice. (Please contact us at office@openwaterserie.com)
  • Previous Winners Bonus: All past winners of the 7 km or 14 km will receive a 21% discount on registration. (Please contact us at office@openwaterserie.com)
  • Recognition Ceremony: During the award ceremony, all present Hall of Fame athletes will be honored with a special certificate.
  • Grand Tombola: A large prize raffle will be held at the end of the award ceremony.
  • Exclusive Cult T-Shirt: We’ll create a special limited-edition T-shirt, available for pre-order at a reduced price (custom sizes available).
  • Memory Lane Promotions: In the months leading up to the event, we’ll share some legendary Backwaterman stories – with chances to win unique prizes.

The 2026 program will mirror the proven 2025 format:

  • Location: Deckerspitz – our new venue since 2025, located at the largest swimming meadow on Lake Ottenstein (near Mitterreith/Zwettl), offering a quieter and more relaxed setting away from the busy boating area.
  • Everything in one place – headquarters, registration, start/finish, refreshments, and get-together all at a single location.
  • No shuttling – short distances for everyone (only the 7 km event includes a shuttle to the starting point).
  • Safety first: All open water distances require swim buoys.
  • 14 km distance: Once again without mandatory e-boat support, making this challenging distance accessible to more athletes. Optional informal support (canoe or SUP) allowed after 1,500 m.
  • More space to relax and enjoy after the race.

Dive into a renewed swimming experience

and enjoy the untouched nature of Lake Ottenstein!
